Introduction

I consider it a huge privilege to be Chair of Governors at Boston Spa Academy. Governors play a key strategic role in leading the direction of an Academy and we have a great team of Governors who bring many and varied skills to our Governing Body whilst acting as ‘critical friends’ yet applying rigour and challenge.

Boston Spa Academy joined The GORSE Academies Trust in September 2018 with very clear strategic goals to improve the provision for our students. The improvements in outcomes that we have seen since then have been brilliant and currently place us in the top 12% of schools nationally and 4th out of 66 for Secondary and 3rd out of 48 for Post-16 across Leeds.

Our strategic aim is to be judged Outstanding by Ofsted and whilst we recognise that is a bar that is now higher under the latest Ofsted framework, all that we do has this goal in mind.

Governors key strategic focus is on delivering exceptional learning in a safe and caring environment for all students whilst maintaining financial jurisprudence.

Over the last year we have seen significant investment in our facilities and infrastructure and into the future there are further plans for improvement in the fabric of the academy.

Being part of The GORSE Academies Trust gives us all the ability to draw upon the wider expertise across the whole Trust and at all levels for staff, governors and students. The value of that alone is immeasurable and the likes of which we never had as a maintained school.

As we move into this new decade our aspirations for our students and our community remain as ambitious as ever.

Governors are a diverse group of committed, hardworking people who offer support, not only through their attendance at meetings but through their presence, within the academy.
Anyone over the age of 18 can become a governor. Being a school governor can be very rewarding and a good way of helping your local community, as well as having a positive influence on the quality of children’s education. Governors play a vital role in shaping the education of young people by helping to set the ethos, vision and strategy to raise school standards so all students reach their full potential.

Boston Spa Academy’s Governing Body welcomes people from all walks of life as each person brings their unique experience and talents to the work of running an academy.

Governor Recruitment

The Governing Body at Boston Spa Academy gives the strategic direction and acts as a critical friend to assist the academy in improving the standards of education and opportunities for all students.

This includes:

  • Setting the vision, ethos and clear ambitious strategic priorities and targets for the academy.
  • Making sure that all young people, including those with special education needs, have access to a broad and balanced curriculum.
  • Engaging stakeholders and ensuring statutory duties are met.
  • Holding the senior leaders to account for teaching, achievement, behaviour and safety.
  • Challenging and strengthening leadership and contributing to the school evaluation.
  • Ensuring financial solvency and effective management of financial resources, including pupil premium to raise standards.
  • Appointment of staff.
  • Serve on panels for disciplinary matters, appeals and grievances.
