At Boston Spa Academy, we wholeheartedly appreciate the significance of the decision you have made to choose us as your child’s secondary school. We regard our parents and carers as equal partners in their child’s education, and we strive to work together to ensure a positive and valuable school experience that allows every individual student to thrive during their time with us.

Our Year 7 transition team, which is overseen by our Assistant Principal, is here to help and support you and your child as they transition from primary to secondary education. We want to make sure that the process is enjoyable and an exciting time for everyone involved and will communicate regularly with you at key points throughout the transition period.

As a community of students from different backgrounds with different perspectives and life journeys, our academy will celebrate and nurture your child’s aspirations, and this includes our students who are on the Special Education Needs (SEN) Register. Students who require extra support will be given it through supportive structures, including access to additional pastoral support and a curriculum that is personalised to meet their needs. Our Year 7 team will work closely with parents and carers whose child may require additional support to ensure that the transition and school environment works for you and your child.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Parents/Carers will be given an online account called ParentPay to top up students’ accounts. This means that instead of cash, a cashless catering card is used. This helps to keep queues moving faster, allowing students more time to eat.

We do our best to liaise with primary schools to place students in forms, however it is not always possible for students to be matched. However, where there are numerous students joining Boston Spa Academy from a primary school, we try to ensure students are in a form with a familiar face.

Your planner is central to your progress at Boston Spa Academy. Each week you will collect stamps in your planner from your subject teachers and Form Tutor. There is also a praise box in each week of the planner, your Form Tutor or subject teachers might wish to add a comment here. Any negative behaviour will be recorded in the negative comments section, there is room for staff to write comments to explain these. It is expected that you will have conversations about these with your Form Tutor and Parents/Carers. In addition to this Parents and Carers are expected to sign the student’s planner at the end of each week to show that it has been checked.

Boston Spa Academy operates a no phone policy, if a phone is visible i.e. seen through a pocket, is out around school or in the no phone zones to-from school the phone will be confiscated for 48 hours. Arrangements will have to be made for a Parent/Carer to collect the phone after 48 hours.

Your Form Tutor will be your main point of contact as you will see them every day and for a total of over 3 hours per week. There will also be a Pastoral Support Officer for Year 7 who will deal with behaviour incidents and any other pastoral issues. As well as the Pastoral Support Officer, there will be a Year 7 Head of Year who will monitor your progress in lessons and provide intervention where necessary. The Director of KS3 will oversee the strategic and personal development of the year group, including behaviours, attitudes and attendance of students and exceptional attainment and achievement of all students.

Registration begins at 8:35 until 9:05am. You will then have a five lesson day; all lessons will be 60 minutes. The school day finishes at 15:05, however many extra curricular clubs finish at 16:00.
